A Cloud Called Bhura, by Bijal Vachharajani
Our housing society recently started segregating our waste and Giggles (9) has been very involved in the process. He reminds me to carry our cloth bags when we go shopping and wonders why people litter, willy-nilly. I see he is interested when we talk of saving the environment but wonders what one person can do especially when everyone around him is either clothed in plastic or actively littering!

A Cloud Called Bhura is one of those rare gems that are well-researched and yet easy to understand. It has that uncanny quality of packing tons of relevant information while still being able to endear itself to children without sounding like they are reading an encyclopedia. The book is about the appearance of a strange, brown cloud that settles itself over Mumbai. This brown cloud is essentially toxic gases, effluents, carbon monoxide etc and wreaks havoc on the city. A group of children -- Amni, Tammy, Mithil, and Andrew decide they have had enough of standing by and waiting on the adults to do something and that it is time for them to take their future into their own hands. They way they organise, educate, and agitate is legendary and will inspire young readers.

I LOVED the book and what I really enjoyed were the supporting characters -- the irritating news reporter, the gaudily dressed reporter, the Sita aur Gita scientists, Chapati the stray puppy, and Reema the hip-swaying bully-- they all played a part in making this story exciting!  We are living in the age of Greta Thunberg and Ridhima Pandey but this book reiterates why it is important to worry about climate change and the impact every small change can make. This book uses terms Gen Z is familiar with and is interspersed with mood boards and sketches which makes this book so relatable.

Bijal Vachharajani calls herself a certified climate worrier and honestly shouldn't we all wear that tag? Pick up this book for your child today to motivate and inspire them to become a climate warrior!
