Circles All Around Us, by Brad Montague
Giggles and Gurgles have never been ones to have a huge circle of friends. They are, by nature shy and prefer smaller groups and close friends. Being at home and not socialising with people over the last year or so has made them regress and set them back even further. Gurgles (5) has started walking away from meeting new kids at the park instead choosing to play with old, known friends.
This book helped us start a conversation about letting people into our circle and therefore learning to trust and befriend people. Circles all around Us is about a boy who draws circles around him. He inhabits the first one with his family. Then he wonders if it would be fun to let his extended family into another circle. Then the conversation moves to his friends at the park? Wouldn't it be fun if he brought them into his circle too? The book stresses on how sharing love and companionship will spread happiness.
Isn't that the perfect message for the times we live in? I truly felt this little picture book had a message for adults too! As the world opens up shouldn't we open up to new experiences, understanding what everyone has been through this past year and maybe be a little bit kinder to all who we meet? The illustrations by Kristi Montague are so adorable (hello kids with the cutest button eyes and noses!) And relatable! My kids could almost see themselves in the book!
