HOW TO FIND STRENGTH TO PICK YOURSELF UP AND START AGAIN AFTER FAILURE

Ever so often I come across Giggles(9) on this trajectory -- learn something new, obsess about it, then drop it just when it starts to get difficult. We've seen this happen with everything from Chess to swimming to Crossword puzzles. Perhaps the reason is being afraid to fail or maybe it is not being the best at everything. So how do you teach a child to persevere?

We Dream of Space is a beautiful book that revolves around siblings Cash, Fitch, and Bird. They live with their overstretched, squabbling parents and each one is lost in their own world. They may appear to be regular teenagers but each one is battling their own demons. Into this regular existence comes the announcement of space mission Challenger, which becomes a metaphor for each child's hopes and aspirations. Bird dreams of escaping her life as a 'plain girl' by becoming NASA's first female shuttle commander. Cash seeks inspiration to turn his life around and Fitch learns to rise from a terrible mistake.

@erinentrada has managed to transport the reader into middle class small town America of the 1980s with her setting and pop culture references. She transports the reader into the mind of middle schoolers and makes the reader cheer on the Challenger crew even though we know how that ends. We are heartbroken and crushed for Bird, we become cheerleaders for Cash, and we watch helplessly as Fitch withdraws into himself and battles his demons. For me this book was a way to tell my child it's ok to fail. Pick yourself up and get better. This one is simply gorgeous! Pick it up today!
