Homework, by Lavanya Karthik
So school starts in a week. After a long and stifling summer vacation which we spent being at home we are getting ready for school -- which will be from home. The only difference, my little Gurgles (5) is all set to start primary school. That means homework, actual textbooks and notebooks and the dreaded W word- writing! We have started preparing him for it and amidst all the talk this book spoke louder than all the words!
This is a hook book from the Duckbill series and true to its names grips the young reader from the first to the last word of the book. What happens when this young boy is asked to find an egg and take care of it as a homework assignment? Basically everything! The reader listens in as the boy tells his teacher how he searched for the perfect egg and took care of it even though his whole family gave up on it! But what comes out of the egg? It's not a bird. And when it comes out it simply doesn't stop growing! So what is it and why have the neighbours and others suddenly disappeared?
To begin with, Giggles (9) and I are convinced the boy on the cover looks like Gurgles! Illustrated by @_lavanyakarthik_ the exaggerated pictures pull the young reader into the story and keep them spellbound. The larger than life pictures add to the drama of story!
This book has kids in uniform , there is a stern looking teacher, there is mention of homework and assignments, and there is even talk of mischief-makers -- everything that makes up a perfect school day! Isn't reading and understanding the best way to prepare for something?
