FLIP FLAP PEPPA
If you read the headline and then saw the book image, you must think this is a really shallow post. Why would I be using a pink funny cartoon pig and strong women in the same sentence? But hear me out, before you bail!
Gurgles (4) is in virtual school this year and is having a few issues with classmates who are girls. He is very quiet and not the type to talk over his classmates so his voice is rarely heard in class. He blames a few girls who speak loudly and clearly and tend to yell his answers before he does. So he has come to the conclusion that all girls, are well silly.
But he does have a fondness for Peppa Pig and that's why this book worked so well for us this evening. We flipped through this book and imagined Peppa in so many situations and as so many strong female characters. We then spoke about the many roles women play -- nurturing ones like nurses, adventurous ones like explorers, and even magical ones like witches and princesses! I know someday we will talk about Marie Curie, Mother Teresa, Michelle Obama and so many others but I'd like to believe Peppa has laid the groundwork for that conversation today.
